چکیده

Design specifications for a high-endurance and range unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) with a gimballed landing platform on top of it for takeoff/landing, transporting to the target area and recharging of small/miniature unmanned helicopters are presented and justified. Specification constraints include UGV strict payload limitations, limited free space affecting power supply availability that impacts on-board available energy, limited endurance and operational range, as well as limitations and restrictions related to electric and non-electric small unmanned vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicles, similar to those of UGV with the most important being limited flying time. Focusing on the All Terrain Robot Vehicle (ATRV-Jr) UGV and a helicopter of the size of the Maxi Joker 2 as a testbed, a detailed analysis of component power consumption reveals reasons for reduced runtime and operational range. After a comparative study of state of the art power supply and battery technologies, a hybrid battery configuration is proposed that improves more than 500% the manufacturer-specified ATRV-Jr endurance (or 1,000% the currently used custom-made ATRV-Jr endurance) by considering: (1) optimum This work was supported by the US Army Research Office, Grant Number W91-11NF-06-1-0069 and SPAWAR, Grant Number N00039-06-C-0062. A sun-tracking solar array that collects and stores energy is integrated with the UGV gimballed landing platform. Simulations demonstrate the validity of the design. Although the testbed is specific, the design itself is generic enough and suitable for other UGV/VTOL vehicles.

Automatic Landing of Small Helicopters on 4 DOF Moving Platforms

In this research, an automatic control system is designed for landing of a small helicopter on a 4 DOF moving platform. The platform has three translational and one directional degree of freedom. The controller design approach is based on development of helicopter nonlinear dynamic model into the SDC (State Dependent Coefficient) form and real time solving of state dependent Riccati equation (S...

Vision-Based Landing of Light Weight Unmanned Helicopters on a Smart Landing Platform

This paper presents a simple and efficient solution to vision guided autonomous landing of a light-weight (<150 Kg) unmanned helicopter on a smart landing platform, called ISLANDS—Intelligent Self-Leveling and Nodal Docking System. The advantage of ISLANDS is that it may allow the helicopter upon docking to recharge its batteries or refuel, thus, indirectly increasing endurance and flight range...

Landing of a Quadcopter on a Mobile Base Using Fuzzy Logic

In this paper, we present control systems for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) which provides aerial support for an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV). The UGV acts as a mobile launching pad for the UAV. The UAV provides additional environmental image feedback to the UGV. Our UAV of choice is a Parrot ArDrone 2.0 quadcopter, a small four rotored aerial vehicle, picked for its agile flight and video ...

Development of a UGV-Mounted Automated Refueling System for VTOL UAVs

This paper describes the latest efforts to develop an Automated UAV Mission System (AUMS) for small vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) unmanned air vehicles (UAVs). In certain applications such as force protection, perimeter security, and urban surveillance a VTOL UAV can provide far greater utility than fixed-wing UAVs or ground-based sensors. The VTOL UAV can operate much closer to an object...

Quadrotor UAV Guidence For Ground Moving Target Tracking

The studies in aerial vehicles modeling and control have been increased rapidly recently. In this paper , a coordination of two types of heterogeneous robots , namely unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) is considered. In this paper the UAV plays the role of a virtual leader for the UGVs. The system consists of a vision- based target detection algorithm that uses the ...
